Our Classes

West Island Karate / Karaté de L'Île offers a variety of classes to suit the needs of any student based on such factors as age, level and availability.  Below is a short summary of the classes we offer.  To determine which class is appropriate for you, we highly encourage you to contact us to discuss your needs.  Better yet, visit our dojo and try out a class.  It's absolutely FREE and there is no obligation (please consult our schedule for an appropriate time).

Munchkin Class

Our Munchkin Class is specifically designed for children 4 to 5 years old.  Recognizing that pre-k and kindergarten children generally having shorter attention spans, the class is taught at a slower pace and is less technical.  Instead, the emphasis is placed on having fun while they are being introduced to the basic movements of Kyokushin Karate.  Specific exercises designed to improve strength, flexibility, coordination and overall fitness are performed every class.  Karate terminology and etiquette are introduced to the students from the beginning which also exposes them to the basics of the Japanese language.  Movements and techniques are taught slowly at a gradually increasing pace which prepares the student to graduate to the regular Kids Class  usually reserved for children 6 years and older.  A system of coloured "bars" or stripes on the belt is implemented at the munchkin level to help set goals, reward hard work and allow the students and parents to gauge progress.  For younger children, the Munchkin Class is a great springboard to the regular Kids Class, allowing them to get the experience and knowledge necessary to thrive when they are ready to make that jump.  The Munchkin Class is an hour long and is currently taught twice a week.

Kids Class

For children aged 6 to 11, each class runs 1 hour and is taught 3 times per week.  Students are taught traditional Kyokushin karate in a fun atmosphere.  Beginners will be taught basic karate techniques, philosophies and etiquette as well as be introduced to Japanese terminology.  Increased strength, flexibility and coordination are physical improvements that you will see in your children.  Non-physical benefits include increased attention span, confidence, discipline and respect.  They will also learn the difference between self-defense and fighting.  Competitive spirit is fostered through tournaments; this is a great way for children to learn about all aspects of competing including fair play, pride and dedication.

Teen Class

This class is for kids aged 12 to 17.  It lasts 1 and 1/2 hours and is taught 3 times per week.  Additional focus is given to the mental aspects of karate as well as discipline, respect and control.  We continue concentrating on a balance of strength and flexibility for their growing bodies.

Adult Class

Our Adult Class is designed for men and women interested in developing their mind and body, whatever age they may be.  We work on improving your cardiovascular system, and our physical exercises will help your body become more firm, toned and flexible.  You will gain confidence and learn new skills such as self-defense that will have a positive impact on your everyday life.  You will feel good about yourself physically and mentally, and your ability to meet the challenges of daily life will improve.  To fit the needs of our adult students, we offer a comprehensive training program which includes self-defense training, optional participation in the competitive arena (tournaments) and of course training towards the achievement of a black belt.  Students train according to their own abilities in a positive and encouraging environment which allows them to develop at their own pace.  Our instructors are with you every step of the way as they demonstrate techniques and help you develop to your full potential.  Classes are 1 and 1/2 hours in duration and are taught 3 times per week.
